Most of the swimming will take place along the white sandy beaches and turquoise coastlines of Lewis and Harris or freshwater lochs that are easily accessed and are suitable to all swimming abilities. The choice of location will be tailored to your requirements but will also depend upon the conditions of the day.

The most challenging swims will be between small islands, across channels or around rugged areas of coastline but this will only be undertaken by the more experienced sea swimmers with water craft safety provided. Long-distance swims to outer islands can be arranged by special request.

Wetsuit, socks/boots, goggles and gloves are included in your experience if required. Mandatory equipment (bright swim cap and tow-float) will also be provided. You are welcome to bring your own equipment but your tow-float and swim cap will need to meet the safety requirements and is mandatory for wetsuit and non-wetsuit swims.

The temperature of the sea around the Hebrides varies from 9 - 14 degrees in the summer so if you are not used to these temperatures you might want to bring a thermal rash vest for over your swimsuit or under your wetsuit. Time in the water can be adjusted according to experience.

Loch temperatures can be higher than the sea in the summer but much colder in the winter.

For beginner sessions, please ensure you can tread water for a few minutes and swim at least 10 minutes non-stop in a pool before booking. Beginner sessions are undertaken along the beach/shore where entry and exit points are easily accessible. For any other guided swim including swimming holidays (excluding beginner retreats) you must be confident swimming a mile in the open water and if you prefer to swim without a wetsuit please ensure you are acclimatised to colder temperatures for the distances mentioned above. Your guide is an insured experienced open water swimmer, STA Open Water Coach an RLSS Open Water Lifeguard. For longer distances extra guides/kayaks or boat safety will be provided.

For the more adventurous you can tackle a swim all the way round to the Traigh Mhor, a stunning turquoise lagoon once visited never forgotten. A distance of 1.5 miles. Half Day Excursion

You haven't seen the Isle of Lewis if you haven't visited Uig on the West side of Lewis. Wrapped in white sandy beaches with uninhabited islands and green hills with sheep grazing casually, this is not an area to miss on your trip to the Outer Hebrides.

Swimming from the outstretched sheltered beach of Reef (Traigh na Berie) we'll gently guide you towards the tiny island of Siaram Mor (big) and Siaram beag (small) joined together by a white sandbank. You can stop here for a short explore or snorkel and return back to Reef beach or you can continue onto Pabbay Mor*, a larger island with a blue lagoon, smuggler's cave and natural arch. Your rucksack will be transported so you can explore Pabbay for an hour or so.
